Welcome to The Denver Public Library's Manuscript Collection News. This page is updated monthly and includes new Manuscript Finding Aids, Hidden Treasures of the Manuscript Collection, Recent Donations, Archivists Notes and previous Manuscript News.
A note about the Manuscript Collection: all Manuscript Collections are cataloged and a brief record is available through the Library catalog. Only a portion of the Manuscript Collection has extensive online guides found in the Manuscript Finding Aids that contain detailed descriptive information and lists of contents including the following new materials.
Captain Hildreth Frost commanded Company A of the Second Infantry, National Guard of Colorado that was involved with the infamous coal strike in 1914. Only nine of these particular troops were involved with the Ludlow Massacre, but the correspondence and papers give insight into the events leading up to it. Later Frost became a prominent Colorado Springs attorney who specialized in Teller County, Colorado mining.
Adelaide French lived in Denver or on a near-by ranch all of her life. She was a member of Morning Study Club, and Territorial Daughters of Colorado. Interested in genealogy and local history, she was one of the founders and long time president of the Colorado Genealogical Society. The Collection includes her diaries from 1890-1971; personal, genealogical, and organizational papers; research notes and writings; newspaper and magazine articles.
The Louisa Ward Arps Papers date from 1880-1985 and document her research and work for the books, speeches, articles and television program Arps published and contributed to. The Collection also includes photographs taken by her husband, Elwyn Arps and more than 70 unidentified glass negatives from Frank Rice.
Jane Silverstein Ries was the first woman landscape architect in Denver, Colorado. She graduated in 1932 from Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture for Women. Her private practice in Denver served over 2000 private clients. She also designed the herb and plains gardens at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The Collection has project files; client files; notes; pamphlets; bills; and thousands of photographs of the yards of clients before and after her work.
An exhibit of photographs, memorabilia, papers, and ephemera from the World War II activities of the 10th Mountain Division will be on display through October in the 5th floor gallery of the Central Branch of the Denver Public Library. The display was prepared as part of the last official National Reunion organized by the WW II Veterans. Nearly 1,000 will attend the reunion put on by the 10th Mountain Division Association in early August.
Elements of Preservation Workshop
Saturday, October 6, 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.
Open House Tours: 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Central Library, Gates Western History Reading Room - Level 5
No reservations are required.
Join the Archives staff of the Denver Public Library as they discuss how to keep your precious old family photographs, scrapbook albums and family artifacts safe for generations.
The archivists will explain the elements – heat, light, and moisture – that threaten the written, printed and photographic materials you have in your home. They will explore the creation, maintenance, and storage of materials. This workshop will include a chance to see examples of historic and famed ephemera from the Western History Collection.
In addition to the workshop, behind the scenes tours will be conducted at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is your chance to see the work done by archivists; how the materials are protected from the elements; how finding aids are created to allow researchers to review the contents of the collection online to determine if they need to examine it in person.
Reservations are not required for the workshop or the open house tours. To schedule a group tour during the month of October contact Ellen Zazzarino at 720-865-1905 or email her at ezazzar@denverlibrary.org
If you have materials, artifacts or family information you would like to donate, please visit the donation guidelines page.
